Type of work performed: HVAC system replacement with ceiling-mounted indoor unit
Area of the apartment: 93 m²
Material/technique used: heat pump system with concealed ceiling cassette
Location: Campbell, California
An outdated HVAC system can significantly impact energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and operational costs in multifamily housing. In Campbell, California, our team was engaged to replace an aging system in a multifamily apartment complex with a modern, energy-efficient solution from Carrier.
The original HVAC system in the apartment had become inefficient and unreliable, causing uneven indoor temperatures and elevated utility costs. The client sought a quiet, high-performance replacement that would improve air distribution without compromising interior aesthetics or requiring extensive structural modifications.
One of the primary challenges was the limited ceiling space available for system integration. To address this, we selected a Carrier multi-split heat pump system equipped with a low-profile ceiling cassette. This configuration ensured optimal airflow distribution throughout the apartment while maintaining a minimal visual footprint.
Our installation process began with the removal of the legacy unit, followed by the deployment of the new Carrier outdoor heat pump, placed discreetly behind the building. The indoor unit was integrated into the ceiling cavity, providing centralized and unobtrusive climate control. This design allowed for zoned temperature regulation and consistent thermal comfort.
Following the installation, the apartment experienced a measurable increase in energy efficiency—HVAC-related energy consumption was reduced by approximately 30%, resulting in substantial cost savings. Noise levels were also significantly decreased due to the advanced design of the Carrier equipment.
The Carrier ceiling-mounted heat pump system was selected for its compact form factor, energy efficiency, and reliability. It utilizes variable-speed compressor technology to maintain consistent temperatures with reduced energy demand, contributing to long-term savings and environmental benefits.
A key addition to this project was the Nest Learning Thermostat, a smart, self-learning device designed to streamline indoor climate control. This wireless electronic thermostat automatically adjusts to household temperature preferences, learning and programming itself within days. With built-in Wi-Fi, users can remotely monitor and manage settings via smartphone, tablet, or desktop, making it convenient and efficient.
The thermostat optimizes energy consumption by detecting occupancy and switching to energy-saving mode when no one is home. It features integrated sensors for temperature, humidity, motion, and ambient light, ensuring precise comfort control. Suitable for a wide range of heating systems—including HVAC units, gas, electric, oil, and heat pumps—it also supports multi-zone applications.
Its intuitive circular design fits discreetly into various interiors, and the Airwave feature continues cooling even after the AC cycles off, reducing compressor usage. By installing the Nest thermostat, the property gained enhanced comfort control, improved system efficiency, and further reductions in energy usage.
For continued system performance, we recommend routine maintenance, including seasonal inspections, air filter replacement, and refrigerant level checks. These steps help ensure optimal operation and longevity.
