Type of work performed: HVAC system installation
Area of the apartment: 130m²
Material/technique used: Carrier multi-position air handler with Carrier heat pump
Location: Los Altos, California
Living in California means you need an HVAC system that can keep up with warm summers, cool winters, and tight installation spaces. That’s exactly what our recent project in Los Altos was all about: making comfort possible, even when space is limited.
Our client needed an efficient, quiet heating and cooling solution that could be installed in a confined attic. The existing system was outdated and bulky, and it was clear from the beginning that a standard-sized air handler just wouldn’t fit. They wanted a solution that wouldn’t require major structural modifications but still delivered powerful performance.
Enter Carrier’s new high-efficiency, multi-position air handler. This model is designed to be split into two sections—a lifesaver when working with attics or tight utility spaces. Pairing it with a matching high-efficiency Carrier heat pump allowed us to deliver the full package: heating, cooling, and energy savings in one streamlined system.
The project kicked off with a full assessment of the existing equipment, space constraints, and electrical supply. Since the Carrier air handler can operate on either 208/230V or 115V, we had flexibility in how we approached installation—no need to rewire or upgrade the panel. Once the old unit was safely removed, our technicians carefully maneuvered the split air handler into the attic and assembled it on-site. The Carrier heat pump was positioned outside the home, connected and calibrated to work in sync with the indoor unit.
After installation, the client immediately noticed a difference. Temperature control became consistent across all rooms. Noise levels dropped noticeably. Most importantly, they saw an almost 35% reduction in energy usage compared to the previous system—a win for both their utility bill and the environment.
This new Carrier system wasn’t just chosen for its compact design. It uses variable-speed technology that adapts to the home’s needs in real time, reducing cycling and improving overall comfort. Plus, its compatibility with smart thermostats ensures even greater control and efficiency.
For maintenance, we recommend seasonal tune-ups, keeping filters clean, and ensuring the outdoor unit stays clear of debris. With proper care, this system will continue performing efficiently for years to come.
